LOGBOOK SUMMARY:

This is a fine example of a near-to-end-of-life hydraulic R44. It is 12 years old in July 2011 and it has just 127 hours left to go until it needs a re-build. Given the number of hours 176 will need the 12 year overhaul, but there are some rather nice bonuses that will keep the cost down.

It has a:

- Half life engine

- Half life alternator, starter motor and magnetos

- Almost new carburettor

- Half life spindle bearings

- 2/3rd life hydraulic pump

- Almost new hydraulic activator

- Half life tail rotor hub

Your engineers will be able to make a better judgement than I can, but my instinct would be to leave these parts on the aircraft at time of rebuild.

It is in very good condition. The only damage I could see is what looks like a cigarette burn on the front passenger seat. It is actually an acid burn from some cleaning fluid. There is also a slight crack underneath near the tow hitch where someone has used a Helimover rather carelessly.

There is no corrosion that I could see.

The latest Service Bulletins have been done (including the carbon monoxide sensor), and the annual is not due until July 2010.

It’s a lovely solid blue colour with tan leather seats. The equipment is pretty basic, with a 7 hole panel, a push-button mode “C” transponder, and, of course, the ubiquitous Skyforce III GPS.

It also has superb noise cancelling Sennheiser headsets which you’ll love.

This aircraft will suit a private pilot who wants to get on the helicopter ownership ladder. You’ll have 18 months of flying, and then the aircraft will need an overhaul.

If you are thinking of buying this one, you should plan to keep it and have the overhaul done. The cost will be much reduced due to the half life engine and other part-lifed components, and this is how you will get best value.

At £60,000 VAT PAID, it’s a great helicopter at a budget price.

If you are coming from abroad, London Luton is the most convenient international airport, and we’ll be delighted to meet you here, or at another suitable airport.
