Hi,

Why do IR A-A missles need to be cooled? Is this something to do with aquiring the target in some way?

Thanks just something I've alway wondered.

It's a lot more sensitive when you cool it down. Cooling made it possible to go from tail acpect only to all aspect.

Fx does something that's 25 degrees Celsius not feel especially hot to you, but if you stick your finger in a bucket of ice for 10 minutes & feel it again it would feel hot ;o)

Hi RUN,

Wow! That's interesting. Is it possible for the missle to get confused in some way with other heat emmiting sources & who designed and developed the cooled heat seeker?

Yes, but they are getting better and better. First generation missiles had a tendency to go for the sun and reflections.

I don't know who designed them
